CBD: How Does It Work?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical substance from the cannabinoid family that naturally occurs in the cannabis plant. Experts have isolated 108 different types of cannabinoids in cannabis.

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is probably the best-known cannabis chemical substance thanks to its psychedelic properties– however, CBD is quickly gaining ground due to its potential therapeutic benefits.

How does CBD work?

CBD (and also THC) work by interacting with our body’s endocannabinoid system, a regulatory system made of naturally occurring cannabis-like molecules. These endocannabinoids, as they’re called, function like neurotransmitters, shuttling messages through the body to help maintain homeostasis. Cannabinoids like CBD and THC connect with the endocannabinoid system at two known receptors: CB1 and CB2.

CB1 receptors are primarily found in the brain– where they interact with cognition, memory, motor skills, and also pain– but also in the peripheral nervous system, liver, thyroid, stomach, and more. THC attaches itself to these receptors, inhibiting the release of neurotransmitters and perhaps increasing the release of others, altering functioning.

Scientists believed that CBD did the same thing, however with CB2 receptors– which are bountiful in the immune and stomach systems, and the brain and nerve system. Although the appropriate means CBD influences our bodies is still unknown, researchers think it encourages the body to produce more of its own endocannabinoids, which might help reduce anxiety, pain, and inflammation.

CBD is being marketed as a bit of a magic bullet, with suppliers explaining it can do anything from eliminating anxiety to stopping the spread of cancer. Scientists claimed it is showing promise. Early research suggests that it may help fight anxiety, ease signs of schizophrenia and minimize pain.

The strongest evidence of CBD’s effectiveness, however, is about epilepsy. In 2018, the FDA-approved medicine was used to deal with Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet disorders, two rare and extreme types of epilepsy.

CBD is available in a variety of forms. A few of the most common CBD delivery methods are listed below, however, how it’s used depends on personal needs and preferences. The delivery approach rapidly affects its functions and also what type of effects it carries to the body.

Edibles– They are a wide variety of products to consume or consume alcohol, like gummies or chocolates. Edibles can take anywhere from 20 mins to 4 hours to work.

Oils and tinctures– are processed and also concentrated forms of CBD that are normally placed under the tongue using a dropper and absorbed into the bloodstream.

Capsules– and pills, are ingested by mouth and also look similar to the vitamins and/or medicines you would find in a drugstore. They typically contain CBD Oil or CBD isolate.

Topicals– are CBD-infused oils, creams, and also lotions that are planned to be used directly on skin, hair, or nails. They’re a popular way to deal with localized pain, however, are also used as skin, hair, and also massage oil.
